Consider Your Group’s Size and Needs
The first step in choosing your ideal canal boat is to consider the size of your group and the space you will need to accommodate everyone comfortably. Canal boats, often referred to as narrowboats or barges, vary in length and can accommodate anywhere from two to ten people. Floating Holidays has a varied fleet that caters to different group sizes, ensuring that whether you’re planning a romantic getaway or a family reunion, there’s a boat that fits your needs.
But it’s not just about the number of berths. Think about the layout and the living space. Do you need multiple toilets and showers? Would a large dining area or an open-plan kitchen enhance your experience? Remember, a boat is not just a means of transport; it’s your home for the holiday. Rooms on boats are uniquely versatile, often serving multiple purposes, so look for a layout that suits your group’s lifestyle.
Some of our boats can have either twin or double beds in the cabins, and some to accommodate extra guests have a make up double bed in the lounge. It can on occasion be better to go for a slightly larger boat with fixed berths to ensure a comfortable stay.
The Route You Wish to Explore
Your choice of boat could also be influenced by the route you intend to take. The narrow and winding
Llangollen Canal, famous for its breathtaking viaducts and aqueducts, might call for a more nimble narrowboat, offering easier maneuverability. On the other hand, the Four Counties and Cheshire Ring routes, known for their diverse landscapes and historic towns, might allow for a larger vessel, giving you more space and comfort as you explore at a leisurely pace. That being said all our boats can travel either of these routes.
Each route throws unique challenges and sights your way, and it’s vital to match your boat to these experiences. Floating Holidays’ expert team can provide invaluable advice on which boats are best suited for which routes, based on your group’s desires and itinerary. If you would like to ask any questions about the best route for a particular boat then get in touch with us.
Think About Your Comfort and Amenities
While adventure and exploration are key to a canal boat holiday, comfort and amenities play a significant role in enhancing your experience. Modern narrowboats are cleverly designed, offering creature comforts you might not expect on the water. From central heating and hot showers to fully equipped kitchens and cozy living areas, these boats blend the rustic charm of canal life with modern living standards.
Consider what amenities are important to you. Are you looking forward to cooking gourmet meals with local produce, or are simple meals more your style, meaning you need less kitchen space? Is a comfortable seating area important for evening relaxation? How about an outdoor space where you can enjoy your morning coffee or an evening glass of wine as the countryside gently passes by? Floating Holidays offers a range of boats with various styles and layouts, ensuring you can find the perfect match for your holiday style.
Another consideration is the pros and cons of each boat. Some of our boats have large super comfy king size beds in the cabin, however it is at the trade off that there are no front doors onto the bow deck. On the other hand our fleet boats which have smaller double beds do have front doors onto the bow deck, so if you would like to enjoy cruising the canals as a passenger reading your book on the front deck there is maybe a trade off with the size of the beds as an example or vice versa as an example.
Choosing Based on Experience and Support
If you’re new to canal boating, the thought of piloting your own vessel might seem daunting. However, with the right boat and support, it can become one of the most rewarding aspects of your holiday. Many boats are surprisingly user-friendly, designed with novices in mind. Before you set sail, you’ll be given a comprehensive briefing and hands-on instruction to ensure you’re comfortable and confident at the helm.
Floating Holidays places a strong emphasis on support and guidance, offering boats that are easy to handle for beginners, while still providing the features and performance experienced boaters expect. Additionally, they are just a phone call away should you need assistance or advice during your trip.
